Grand Canyon
I'm an expert on the Grand Canyon, because I had a relative who worked there and have visited many times. The Wikipedia entry on the Grand Canyon is accurate, but it does contain some misinformation. For example, the lead paragraph says it was carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries, which is true, but erosion has also helped carve the Canyon and create the many buttes and monuments throughout the canyon. This is not addressed until the "geology" section, and there is it not very clear. In addition, architect Mary Co
In addition, it says one of the popular activities at the Canyon is "running. A traditional encyclopedia would have fact checkers to help ensure all of the entry was correct, and it is clear this entry has omissions and errors. The Hopi House history also does not give her credit for designing the building, and says it was built by Hopi Indians. Much of the interest in the Canyon is tourist related, and there is very little information here that addresses that, although the entry does give links to that information. I would recommend this entry with some reservations, as I've noted. They aided in the design and building, but I do not believe the building was entirely built by Hopis. There are some inaccuracies, and I believe information from a traditional encyclopedia or even the National Park Service Web site, would be more accurate and informative. I did see bias in the entry; it covered history, Native American tribes of the area, archaeology, and buildings. However, there is a section discussing the present Park Superintendent, and a discussion of a "creationist" book being sold in the Grand Canyon Bookstore, which does not seem to belong in this entry at all. lter is listed as a "settler" of Phantom Ranch, when in reality she designed the buildings at Phantom, but never "settled" there. I believe a traditional encyclopedia would make more sense, and give a better feel for the geology and history of the Canyon, as well. " Hiking maybe, but at high altitudes, such as the Canyon, running is much more difficult than at lower elevations.
