The Power of Interpersonal Communication in Human Life

             Interpersonal communication is a connection, association or involvement between two persons (Lexicon Publishing LLC 2007). The richness or effectiveness of interpersonal communication determines the strength of a relationship, organization or society. This study will investigate some current available literature on what constitutes powerful or effective interpersonal communication and how it can be enhanced to further enrich human relations.

             Hyatt writes that effective communication, regardless of gender, must take into consideration the person and context in which the communication takes place. He clarifies that no special formula is required for a man to speak effectively with a woman. Effective interpersonal communication requires common sense, sensitivity, and respect. Whether verbal or non-verbal, communication is an excellent behavioral skill and talent but which many take for granted. Hyatt discusses soft power and its principles and how it can be learned well and practiced. He emphasizes the cliche that actions speak louder than words and how the cliche applies to interpersonal communications. Certain mannerisms or body language may enhance or oppose the message without the speaker's awareness. It may be a twitch of the lip, a squint or the volume of the voice. A twist of the shoulder may also confuse the message. Body language all alone transmits a separate and clearer message to the recipient or observer. Silence in itself is an extreme form of nonverbal communication, which asserts its own message with power.
