Setting the Tone in "1984": George Orwell's Pessimistic and Disillusioned Perspective to Modern SocietyThe Second World War triggered a series of events and actions that ultimately changed the way different societies viewed the war in general. While the popular belief that wars and conflicts occur because of a nation's or nations' fight for a worthy cause for humanity, there also abound beliefs that wars were simply a product of nations' contesting need for more power, influence, and territory.This was the belief that prevailed in George Orwell's psyche, as he became acquainted and indirectly involved with the wars that occurred within his lifetime, which included the following major wars: the First World War, Second World War, and the Cold War. This was the prevailing belief that was echoed in the novel "1984," wherein he criticized the loss of humanity that results from the dominance of totalitarianism. Confession became the method through which Julia and Winston betrayed each other, and denounced their unfaithfulness to Big Brother. The following entry in his diary became a mirror through which these growing desensitization to violence and injustice became apparent (Chap. 15):When once they get hold of us there will be nothing, literally nothing, that either of us can do for the other. Homer (2001) echoed Peat's and Gorbachev's assessment of Orwell's attitude and tone in the novel, adding that in "1984," Orwell "sees no hope for redemption in a world suffused with the worst in human nature" (24). The latter constantly monitors people in their everyday activities, contributing to the notion of helplessness that later became a cause of disillusionment, particularly for feeling individuals like Winston. Winston Smith as the protagonist of the novel experienced this kind of disillusionment when he and his lover, Julia, were arrested by the Thought Police as a result of their clandestine meetings, wherein they talked about and expressed criticisms and disloyalty to Big Brother. As explicated by Dyens earlier, the "organic world" had indeed "faded away into oblivion" in Oceanian society, as the Party and Big Brother took over every aspect of people's lives, making this kind of monitoring possible through the Ministry of Love, Thought Police, Newspeak, and telescreens. This was illustrated in Winston's claim that "If I confess, they'll shoot you, and if I refuse to confess, they'll shoot you just the same. In Oceania, the Party and Big Brother had consistently inculcated in the minds of people that the present society is the best society there is, as compared to Eastasia and Eurasia. Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him. the surrounding organic world must fade away into oblivion. In addition to the tone of disillusionment, the tone of pessimism also prevailed in the novel "1984. If I confess, they'll shoot you, and if I refuse to confess, they'll shoot you just the same.
