A Clockwork Orange

             A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is a very controversial and thought provoking book. It lures you in by showing you possibilities of the future, while teaching you a whole new way of speaking.
             The book starts off compelling, and stays that way until the very end. The book begins by introducing you to your, "humble narrator," Alex. Alex is a 15-year old boy living in the future. He hangs out with his gang, whom he refers to as, "Droogs." Throughout the book, Anthony Burgess uses language in a very unique way by creating his own slang:
             "This device could easily have become a bore, but Mr. Burgess handles it with intelligence and for a purpose. The neologisms are provocative, their logic often ironically apparent (cigarettes are called "cancers"), and by the end of the book one is left with a satisfactory sense of having learned a language and become part of an in-group, which is exactly Mr. Burgess's purpose"
             In the beginning of the book, it is hard to understand but intrigues you because of the language. I agree with what this critic is saying because by the end of the book, you fully understand everything that Alex speaks of, and that in itself is an amazing thing. The fact that Anthony Burgess was able to create his own dialect, and then have people fully understand it, and enjoy it shows how amazing the book really is. One critic wrote,
             "It lights up page after page in pin-ball machine fashion, and midway through the book you can understand it as well as Alex."
             From beginning to end, the book speaks about freedom of choice. In the beginning of the book, Alex chooses to be bad, and to commit crime, murder, and rape almost as if he's doing nothing wrong. In the middle of the book, he gets sent to prison. He gets chosen for an experiment called, "Ludivico's Technique." One critic wrote that Ludivico's Technique was:
