personal statement
From an early age I had a great love for theatre and performing. At the age of 8, I took my first steps onto the stage in Newry's Pantomimes. Since then I have become more involved through drama groups in Newry and my love for performing and everything surrounding it has grown and grown.I am a keen member of the Bosco Drama Group in Newry. The first show in which I participated was 'Annie' in 1999. Since then, I have played parts in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and most recently 'Godspell', amongst other smaller community drama projects. In September 2002, we performed 'Godspell' at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera where we won three awards including Best Northern Ireland Society. This was one of the most memorable experiences of my life to date. For me travelling with a production and having to adapt it to another venue was challenging but rewarding. Within the drama group I am also involved in the Executive Committee as a Youth Representative. In addition, we also have a Shadow Committee for the young people
Last year I worked as stage crew for our school's production of 'Pinafore Pirates'. It took a lot of compromise, energy and commitment but it was not a wasted effort, we all achieved excellent marks, and even if this weren't the case, the satisfaction of performing a piece of theatre we had devised from scratch was a reward in itself. For my Advanced level subjects, I chose to study mathematics, Spanish and theatre studies, these were obvious choices as I had enjoyed studying all three. I worked along side the lighting and sound technician, rigging and focusing lights and stage assembly. To conclude, I hope that my statement has demonstrated my desire to study this course and my ability to do so. These duties have required me to develop my interpersonal skills and force me to work on my own initiative. For these past two years, I have worked in a high street clothes store in Newry's shopping centre. At some performances I acted as runner, making sure everyone was where they should be. I feel that I would benefit greatly by doing so, and look forward to the possibility of studying at your university in the near future. Spanish Exchange in April of this year. In this week I learned a lot about the practical and business area of theatre. Through many theatre visits as part of my theatre studies course, I feel that I now have the ability to analyse actors' performances and the effectiveness of costume, set and lighting.
