Since the beginning of human life on earth, there has been language in one for or another. From drawings on cave walls to miming to the hundreds of dialects that now populate this planet, language is everywhere. However, despite this universality of language, all language is not equal. In fact, language is often one of the main contributing factors to the creation of social classes in any given society. Although all the classes have language, those who own the language own the power of society. Clearly, even within the same dialect or language group, there are various forms of language. At the one end of the language scale is illiteracy, or the inability to read and write. On the opposite end of the language spectrum is the literate individual, one who has a strong grasp on all functions of language (reading, writing and speaking), often as a result of an extensive, high-quality education. Typically the illiterate individual is found in the lower classes and the literate individual is found in the upper classes, thus demonstrating the inherit power struggle found in language. This is a story set, at least during the time it was written, in the future where the nation is ruled by a totalitarian regime. Every act done, even the act of thinking, is monitored by Big Brother. As is demonstrated by Nineteen Eighty Four, language equates to power. At the bottom of the pyramid is the Proles, which comprise of eighty-five percent of the population. With the language of money, one is able to have access to the opportunities that lead to power. Once in Congress, the politicians use language to craft laws that enable them to maintain their power. The society found in 1984 is that of a pyramid. Depending on who the candidate's audience is, he or she will use language that caters to that group, thus earning their favor. Surprisingly, this science-fiction like language of Newspeak has found its way into modern day society. are to the literate individual, the more power you will have in society. Language works for those who have it and works against those who do not. First and foremost is the concept of Big Brother is Watching. The critics of such legislation referred to it as "Big Brother Legislation". The language owned by the rulers is called Newspeak, which is a language closely based on English but has a greatly reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar. Another example is the Patriot Act, which essentially takes away freedom of speech, a form of language, that was specifically protected by the Founding Fathers in order to ensure that the language of dissent was available.
