From the perspective of a counselor, there are certain traits that characterize a person that is of good psychological health. Healthy people carry themselves with confidence and demonstrate a positive mental attitude. They love and accept themselves for who they are, and accept others for who they are. It is the counselor's role to facilitate healing by aiding individuals in the discovery of the tools within them. Characteristics of poor mental health in this age category are evident through destructive behaviors and social maladaptations. In the year 2017 I foresee myself as a counselor working with drug addicted youth. Unhealthy people are often unable to maintain balance the facets of their lives, leading to poor overall health. Behaviorally, healthy people do not partake in actions that are destructive to themselves or others. Due to the turbulent nature of the teen years, it may sometimes be difficult to accurately assess whether individuals of this age are psychologically unhealthy, or are just going through a "normal" phase of growing up. I will have developed the knowledge and skills to provide empathic counseling to this population. It is my belief that all people have within them the potential for change. In terms of behavior, unhealthy people sometimes demonstrate self-destructive behaviors, such as drug and alcohol abuse, or behaviors that are injurious to others, such as violence. On the other hand, people who are unhealthy psychologically often demonstrate an overall negative attitude, which permeates all aspects of life. The age group I wish to counsel is youth. s, including work, family, and school, while maintaining physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. The type of counseling I will be doing is client-centered.
