Healthcare as a Career

I became interested in the healthcare field at an early age. My family has worked in the healthcare field in a variety of areas, and we had a family friend who had a son with various healthcare issues, from asthma to heart problems. He has been in and out of the hospital throughout his life, and we would often visit him while he was in the hospital. I always was fascinated by the machines, sounds, and smells of the hospital (good and bad!), and always looked forward to my visits, there. I did not enjoy knowing there were so many sick, elderly

I may specialize in lab or analytical work, because I found this area so fascinating and especially important to the overall healthcare experience. I found I liked the lab especially, and would hang around there waiting for results after I dropped off items for the lab to analyze. people there, but I always hoped I could work in a hospital and help others who needed my help. I know there are aspects of nursing and the hospital setting that are difficult, but I find the entire hospital setting exciting and extremely gratifying at the same time. There are aspects of healthcare that I know I will find difficult to deal with, but I am sure it is the right career choice for me, and I look forward to beginning the journey to healthcare professional. I know that working in healthcare is what I am meant to do, because I have been interested in it for so long, and because my experiences so far have been satisfying and interesting. I hope I can make a difference is patient's and their families lives, and save many lives during my career. When I was in high school I volunteered as a "candy striper," just to see if I enjoyed the real hospital situations I would encounter, and while many of them were difficult, I found that I looked forward to those afternoons I would spend in the different units of the hospital. I also enjoyed the nurses' stations, and made friends with several of the nurses, asking them questions about their jobs, their schooling, and their satisfaction with their duties.
