Parental Roles and Responsibility
Parenthood has a very complex structure in the United States. It is an institution that has failed to evolve with responsibility and contains within it many serious flaws that have not been addressed for fear of opening Pandora's box. But if we are truly concerned about the future of our society, our children and the community they grow up in, we need to look at this institution more carefully. What is parenthood in the United States? How has it evolved over the years and what has this evolution done to our basic moral values? These are some critical questions that may attack our so-called freedom to live as we choose principle but which need to be answered nevertheless. The biggest problem with American society is it's misguided pursuit of freedom. Freedom from what! Authority, morality, religion, social laws in fact freedom from everything that could bring order to society. American public has pursued freedom so fervently and with such great recklessness that it never even paused for a second to think about the consequences of this freedom. Today if someone is rude to his/her parents, we as judges become immensely confused as to how to judge the situation. Our moral and ethical values tell us that the person was wrong becaus
In one research it is found that children are suffering today because parents have encroached on each other's turfs. The same is not the case in the east where parents still have considerable influence on their children because in those societies, mothers and fathers have well defined roles1. It is our children that we must think about and the problems they face because of the confusion we feel or the choices we have made. In our society the basic problem lies in destruction of moral values. We must thus carefully see how our choices may affect our children in the long run. But sadly we are victims of our own senseless and completely misguided support of freedom and now if our children do something wrong, we are totally helpless to offer them any advice since we cannot expect they would heed it. And while we may like to think that it doesn't matter, the research indicates that it clearly does. We take pride in alternative lifestyles even though we have no idea as to how that would affect our children. Mothers know that they are required to act as a pillar of strength and support at home offering the child answers to his ethical queries while fathers offer guidance in matters of education and career. It is a well known fact that children of gay parents have to face ridicule and other stressful situation, but still we try not to address this problem and simply sweep it under the carpet in order to avoid potential conflict. They have lost their control over the moral and ethical life of their children because on our way to freedom from everything, we somehow forgot about parental roles and responsibility. For goodness sake, we need to understand that freedom of speech doesn't allow freedom to hurt. The parents are not sure about whose responsibility it is to do what. This lack of definition of roles is something that we need to address seriously. In order to create a more natural and thus a more harmonious society, we need a stronger family structure.
