Law School Personal Statement
Most people's lives are on the receiving end of the law; wherein as a child growing up he learns how to follow rules and regulations; as a teenager learning how, he has to get his driver's license and obey the laws of the road; or in one's mature adult life, more laws have to be followed such us paying your taxes, declaring your income and a number of other legislated acts. Rules, regulations and laws define a civilize society and especially in a democracy like the United States, children learn about obedience and conformity to these conventions. As a child growing up in Taiwan, I was indeed on the receiving end of the law albeit without my knowing or understanding about it. My parents divorced when I was only five years old and whether or not they had a fight or even took it to court regarding my custody I learned as hearsay which I picked up here and there from family members. I went with my father's side of the family and I was actually "adopted" by my grandparents. My
Everything seems fine but there was just one thing - my grandmother did not want me to see my mother and throughout my childhood, I only saw her a few times and these were stolen moments. The unbearable experience I had as a child growing up in Taiwan endeavored me to learn at a young age how the laws were biased against women and they tended to suffer on the issues regarding child custody. father, who back then was only in his mid-twenties, has been living in the United States since high school and was not concerned moving back to Taiwan. My father was also made the general partner without having a proper understanding of what kind of responsibility and liability he was actually going to be accountable for. My mother, who obviously would have a hard time supporting me, did not stand a chance to gain custody although she claimed that she really wanted to; I then stayed with my grandparents as the best possible alternative. Since some of the business partners were overseas, my father was required to be the personal guarantor for them and thus he also became the guarantor for their investment when they applied for loans and mortgages. The laws have improved over the past decades and the society has changed more towards women rights, but the cases over child custody with one side of parents as victims will never end. The business was actually quite success at first. Another experienced was how my father was cheated out of a business when some of his friends persuaded him to open a shopping center in the Downtown Los Angeles area; it was like some kind of commercial investments. Unfortunately, due to the economic crisis in the 1990s, they inevitably were also affected and the shopping center had more vacant shops for lease than they could afford plus and many current lessees' businesses also went under. Indeed, these experiences enlightened me and made me want to become a lawyer and build on a career that will aid in enablement and empowerment of others to use the law in a manner that their rights will not be assuaged. I cannot negate the fact that being a lawyer can mean a stable and financially rewarding career but likewise, it should first and foremost be an answer to the call of service to those who have less in life as well as less in the law. In the same manner that being "uninformed" regarding the law, my parents suffered losses, I intend to use my skills as a lawyer to advise and counsel others on how to make the get the most out of the law so they may be able to stand up for what is due them. Eventually, my father was liable for all the financial debts of the corporation and he was left taking the fall until he had no way out but to declare bankruptcy.
