Transition of Students: Pre-School Through High School

Szymanski (1994) does a compelling job of expressing the transition phases that students go through in their early life (especially pre-school through high school). The writer explains that ones work personality develops during the pre school years, work competencies develop during school years, and work goals develop during high school or later years. A plethora of information is provided that depicts these "corner stones" in career development as well as the importance of these markers in ones life. Another important addition to the reading is the information provided regarding students with disabilities. Children with congenital disabilities often have fewer and less diverse career-related experiences and learning opportunities than do their peers without disabilities (Szymanski, 1994) The writer makes a point of explaining how important it is to give children with disabilities an opportunity to se

e professionals with the same of comparative disabilities. For example, the significance of a mentor in ones given area of choice, as well as making sure they are positive and an individual that the student is able to relate with, this will make transitioning easier; not to mention the import role that environment and family play in career development. Other important points in the reading include information regarding the significance of interactive play with peers without disabilities. Therefore, everyone plays an intricate role in the transitioning of students that one meets. To understands that even those with disabilities require the same support systems, the same responsibilities, the same opportunities. However, some aspects of the writing seem to be information that one would hope everyone knew and understood. In addition, it is imperative to consider and understand the culture of each individual student and how this culture influences ones ability to transition and make sound career choices. That further supports why it is so important to afford extra support to students with disabilities in these transitional stages. The article further reports that children with disabilities have a harder time going through the transitions associated with these lifelong career decisions, on the other hand the writer does make a point to state that these same difficulties are seen in students that do not have disabilities. How intriguing to think that ones career goals are in a sense pre set determined through interactions and choices that are made as early as four and five years old. Maybe it does take a village to raise a child. How intricate the system that comes together to define a single individual. These interactions are believed to help develop ones work personality. The interactions that take place in educational development are directly affected by the surrounding cultures students are exposed to.
