Women's Issues
The book entitled The Difference "Difference" Makes: Women and Leadership, edited by Deborah L. Rhode, collects various articles and writings that reflect and comment on the role women play in leadership positions and how these roles are specifically defined by them being women. In a way, this book picks up where Carol Gilligan's ground breaking book, In a Different Voice, left off. In summary, Gilligan's book laid the foundation of feminine leadership thought with the argument for a "difference theory", or the theory women and men are uniquely different and thus approach things, such as leadership, in different manners. Deborah L Rhode's career has been highlighted with her many articles and work in the legal field that focuses on Gilligan's difference theory, specifically assessing its promises and problems. According to Rhodes, all of her work is focused on flushing out "the importance of multiple frameworks that avoid universal or essentialist claims and that yield concrete strategies for social change." In doing so, she has raised the issue now referred to as the "difference dilemma." The white male executive has information, and connections, that will be of significant value to a new female executive. Namely, this is to break through the glass ceiling and also facilitate the dialog of different voices by using various institutional and individual strategies. Third and finally, there is the inflexible structure of the typical workplace, failing to accommodate the unique, or different, needs of women, such as the need to spend time with their families. According to the introduction, the premise of the book goes back to an article Rhode wrote in 1988, entitled "Perspectives on Professional Women". The answer to this question can only be yes. Barnes, the central observation made is that "the real untapped champions of women are white men. As time goes on, these women advance within the profession and thus break the glass ceiling by nothing more than strength in numbers. The main theme that runs through this discussion is the concept of the glass ceiling and of different voices between the genders. Because this difference is natural, no one way can be said to be "the right way". The premise of the article is that women need to have a prominent role in the legal world in order to make the legal world function better. " The purpose of this section is to leave the reader with an action plan of sorts.
