However, he knows that if he returns with the Darlings, he will no longer have a leadership position. Therefore, it is important to look at further evidence in the book to determine whether Peter is a protagonist, or whether he is actually an antagonist, working against Wendy and her brothers, John and Michael. The pirates capture her and leave her bound on a rock, so that she can drown. However, there are other incidents in the story where Peter is portrayed as a protagonist, even a hero. He also does not teach them how to return from Neverland. The Lost Boys are so named because they fell out of their carriages and were literally lost to their parents. Wendy and her brothers are the protagonists in the story. In Neverland, the Darlings meet several individuals who view Peter as some type of hero. Peter clearly misses being nurtured by a mother. For example, though he teaches Wendy and her brothers to fly, he does not teach them how to stop. The most alarming evidence of that occurs when Michael, the youngest, stops flying and threatens to fall to the ground:"There he goes again!" he would cry gleefully, as Michael suddenly dropped like a stone. As a result, he is unable to truly take care of the Lost Boys. In addition, like the boy that he is, Peter repeatedly engages in competitive and boyish behavior.
