Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind Policies and Board

The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind was founded in 1885, and now has grown to both public K-12 and University programs with a number of campuses throughout the state. According to the school's website, www.fsdb.k12.us/about, the school provides free admissions for all residents of Florida with a mission "to utilize all available talent, energy, and resources to provide public education for eligible sensory-impai

" The school has strict enrollment qualifications for both the blind and the deaf. The Florida State Board of Education states that its mission "is to increase the proficiency of all students within one seamless efficient system, by providing them with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills through learning opportunities," (Florida Board of Education website). The School Board members are responsible for the oversight of the various K-12 and college campuses, regulation of the schools' budget, and implementing the school's Philosophy and Objectives. The Sunshine State Standards are enforced strict subject matter standards which aim to increase the efficiency of student learning and academics. The Florida State School for the Deaf and the Blind helps ensure that all students, despite any disabilities, are given the same opportunities that would fulfill the State Board's mission. The school was originally run by a five member Board until the year 1905, when it was placed into the care of the Florida State Board of Control. Originally established with a budget of twenty thousand dollars, the School Board has increased that budget to about forty million dollars today. In 1963, a seven member Board of Trustees was established, which follows the policies and guidelines set forth by the Florida State Board of Education.
