Comparison: Once More to the Lake and The Yellow Door House

Once more to the Lake and The Yellow Door house both contain some points of comparison since the basic theme is the same i.e. passage of time. In both stories, times have changed and authors are now writing as adults. Their new role is that of a parent while in their memories and the time they are reminiscing about is childhood when they were in the care of their parents. There are some important points of similarity and so some parallels can be drawn:a)Both writers are now adults reminiscing about their childhoodb)Both stories have a physical place to symbolize their childhood. c)Both writers are now parents themselvesd)Both writers talk indirectly about their connection with their parentse)There is a deep sense of nostalgiaf)And there is a fear of losing the symbol that represents their beautiful pastThere are some places where the authors differ:a)White is talking about a specific time in his childhood while Maynard is talking about her entire childhood phaseb)White takes on the role of his father during fishing trip but Maynard doesn't see herself in her mother's placec)The author is at a distance from his 'place' while Maynard still is at a close proximity to her 'place'

She talks about her return to her new home which has a green door. Since both writers are now parents, they seem to have become fonder of their own parents. He seems to be thinking of death while Maynard is thinking of new memories. In their new roles as parents, they know what their parents must have gone through to make their childhood special for them. This fear of losing something special seems deeply connected with a person's sense of who he or she is. Seeing someone else making memories in the way that you had once did can be terribly exciting and disturbing at the same time. Our past makes us who we are and all symbols connected with beautiful memories of the past add value to our worth as a person. Such experiences can be really nostalgic and often make you wish for old times to return. Does everyone have similar memories of childhood? Like Leo Tolstoy said: all happy families are alike, all unhappy families are unhappy in their own way. The fear of loss is genuine in both cases too. If while cleaning your attic, you stumble upon a necklace that belongs to your mother, the feelings that it would generate would be more intense than if you have always had this necklace in your drawer where you could see it everyday. Since Maynard sees the house everyday, she is in close proximity to her childhood memories and reliving the past is not a new experience for her. Childhood may be gone but our life is still going on and we make new memories as adults as well. White is also concerned about urbanization that might destroy some of the precious places in the woods. This is the circle of life and this is what the world is made of.
