Standard English Review

With the growth of computer, communications and information technology, it is difficult to fathom that once the world was an impossibly large place, and contact between countries could be established only by the most time- and resource-consuming means. Now it takes an equal length of time to visit a friend next door and to contact another friend in China via email. With correspondence, it is no longer necessary to wait days or even weeks for a reply by snail mail. Ordering, banking, shopping and business matters have become quick and easy with Internet access. A side-effect of the globalization phenomenon is that global interpersonal communication has necessitated the use of a standard language for communication. The most common language for this purpose is English, and hence the education field has become saturated with foreign and second-language students eager to learn. The common perception is that knowing English will provide job and travel opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. The global nature of the English language has the advantage that it is not necessary to learn a multiplicity of languages in order to conduct business or travel throughout the world. English is also a sound basis


In summary, Standard English is the generally accepted grammatical form of English. Teaching only Standard English has the advantage of focus. Trudgill's fourth point is that Standard English is not a register, meaning it does not adhere to a particular topic or subject matter such as mathematics or sports. While the standard is doubtlessly important, teachers should also be aware that dialect and its use should be encouraged and respected. Teaching this then also means that culture does not form part of the education process. As such, the dialect incorporates a number of standard grammatical rules and norms usually taught to children in endless and forgettable lessons at school. from which to learn other languages should the individual decide that this is necessary. Concomitantly however, the author acknowledges that there is indeed a standard pronunciation in the country, known as "Received Pronunciation", or RP. Codification refers to creating a recognized and fixed from for a language within the society using it. Those interested in using English in their everyday lives and interactions would learn English Communication. While this can also be achieved by incorporating Standard English with this type of teaching, a disadvantage of excluding it is that children are not properly prepared to handle the language requirements of the business or other official environments. An advantage of addressing dialect in the classroom is therefore the cultivation of intercultural respect. Trudgill notes that the particular vocabulary associated with the formal style is often confused with and mistaken for Standard English. This version is then also associated with the specific culture from which the spoken language emerges. As such, it is therefore acceptable to refer to it as a dialect.
