In reading "Benign aggression: The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness" by Erich Fromn , it is apparent that if children feel frustration with a social setting, they will act out that frustration in completely negative ways. For example, social support is related to healthier adolescent functioning. Support, as a construct, has been defined as a sense of belonging, specifically among peers, teammates, community or family members. Adolescents reporting strong social support/low isolation exhibit higher levels of resilience and lower levels of aggression. Adolescents are also less likely to be suicidal if they perceive their family, friends, and peers to be more accepting in the classroom , and if they have more positive friendships, which can be reflected in a school setting. Those who feel supported by counselors, parents, or peers exhibit healthier coping mechanisms and maintain a more positive outloo
From there, without support, aggression will turn into destructive behavior as it is suggested by Fromn. Fromm's alternative is to see aggression as response to frustrating circumstances. If nature or unalterable social realities are at times frustrating, the appropriate and expectable response is a "benign" aggression without destructive passion. Social support refers to social interactions that are perceived by the recipient to facilitate coping and assist in responding to stress. This is felt to exist in animal life and in early human societies as part of a more or less decent struggle for existence. From there, socially supportive environments were presented as pattern interpersonal relationships mediated through shared values and sentiments as well as facilitate the performance of social roles through which needs are met. Social support is thought to reduce the total amount of stress a person experience as well as to help one cope better when stressed (House, & Landis, 2003). Additionally, if the outlook of adults were more positive, adolescents will be more comfortable seeking support without fear of ridicule or rejection. It gives people the confidence to making a positive change and testing their limits when they know they have a community of support they can call upon. If children have socially supportive arrangements as the attributes of socially legitimate roles which provide for the meeting dependency needs without loss of esteem, they are less likely to show aggression while suppressing destructive behavior. The trapeze work gets risky and slippery here, but the tightrope walker goes valiantly on believing in the non-natural (for essentially changeable by better social conditions) quality of that push (The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness). In summation, social support has been defined as an intervening factor tied directly to the coping process (Pearson, 1986). The conceptual framework will be that with more social support from family, churches, and teachers, adolescents will contribute to a lower rate of behavior problems, which may need therapy.
