Race Related Reality

There is no nation in the world that holds racism in greater horror than the United States. The whole fabric of our land seems to be backed by racial factors. For hundreds of years, minorities, blacks in general, have been openly discriminated against not only in social settings but in the workplace and private settings. No matter how many measures have been taken to try and end the problems of racial discrimination, it is still alive and well as we speak. Racism is, indeed, a national obsession. Universities are on full alert for it, newspapers and politicians denounce it, churches preach against it, and America, the land of the free, is full of it. Many people wonder will it ever go away or is it something that we as a people will just have to learn to accept. In the article, "My Secret Life as a Black Man", Anthony Walton talks about how his race is a huge factor in his everyday life. The way he lives his life seems a bit awkward to the people around him. For example, his family members and piers do not always agree with his goals for the future or the type of things he like to do with his time. Growing up, Anthony liked school and reading books the arts, things whi

White employers find many ways to keep from hiring black employees. In this case as in the case with Anthony, racism is a grueling reality and should be dealt with respectfully and with force when needed. Workplace racism has brought about huge changes in our country over the past years. Things like this happen all the time but there are still white and blacks out there who believe that "blacks are paranoid about white discrimination and rush too quickly to charge racism"(Feagin). The advertise job openings in places where they believe blacks will not see them, they recruit in predominantly white areas, rely on employee (predominantly white)referrals and they screen applicants before hiring(Neckerman & Kirschman). This causes the employer to judge the applicant before even really screening their qualifications thus putting inner city blacks in a hole they can't get out of. So, What exactly is black, is it the way you talk, think, react, or dress. Instead of ignoring the situation, the news director chose to use her resources to show the restaurant that she would not stand for the open discrimination the she was experiencing. All that can be said to that is, Until you experience racism, you will never know exactky how it feels to be singled out and in some cases unjustly. In his case, he simply ignored the remarks that were made towards he and his friend, but what sometimes simply ignoring the acts does not always cool the pressure as in the case of a black news director and her date in a white owned restaurant. So called affirmative action laws have been st up to deter discrimination but the effectiveness will never truly be known. This is reality and it happens all the time. Tthat doesn't make me any less qualified or better than any other warm-blooded creature on this earth. To some people, the aformentioned things are too much privilege for blacks.
