1.Discuss the natural link between personal identity and moral action in Confucian thought.Confucius, through his analects, promoted a standard of behavior that allowed an individual to live a fulfilled life. This fulfillment came from an individuals responsibility to one another, and, in a broader context, to society. This meant that those superior had to be kind and nurturing of those subservient. People in the lower strata had to respect those who were superior. And importantly, families had to ensure that there was mutual respect among its members. But Confucius admonished that this rule of behavior (or, formally, ritual) should be internalized. This internalization came from a development of a strong and morally-driven personal identify. Such a person would, without hesitation, indulge in moral behavior. And this moral action was better served and harmonious with personality identify, and not through compulsion from outside (legal, communal) sources.2. What is the relationship between Brahman and Atman?

What was the most inspiring idea you came across in your study of Eastern religions?The most inspiring idea that I came across from the study of Eastern religions can be seen from my answer to the above two questions, and how they relate to my (perhaps, inadequate) knowledge of Christianity. They also arose because people felt an internal need to look up to something powerful and represented good, because evil and good are present among and within people. Brahman is omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, benevolent and not wanting. Lao-tzu believed that to yield is to be preserved whole and deliberate intervention inevitably leads to failure. They are about the relationship between God and the individual. Brahman is equivalent to God (epitomized by the Hindu God Brahma, which forms the central deity of the trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh). As a student living in contemporary times, where everything is so fast-paced and everything one achieves seems the result of being extremely competitive, it is adopt a laid back attitude. What was the most confusing idea you came across in your study of Eastern religions?The Eastern religion which confused me the most is Taoism. Though Confucianism cannot be considered a religion but a philosophy and a way of life, Hinduism and Christianity bears some resemblance. What inspires me is that how wonderful it is that people independently, sought divine inspiration which served as nourishment that food could not provide.
