Hitler Rejects the Emancipation of Women

1. Hitler primarily assigns to women the task of raising children and caring for their homes. Women are to further the cause of Germany by bearing children to raise in the image of the true German. As such, mothers are to teach their children love for Germany in everything they do, including cooking, clothing, and lifestyle. In a wider social context, women were also to boycott Jewish and other merchants in favor of supporting local German ones. In this way, women were seen as instrumental in phys

ically building a nation of Germans that love their country, and building it economically by supporting only local merchants. Indeed, one might further infer that Hitler saw the two concepts as mutually exclusive: like Jewish intellectualism is a contradiction in terms, for him, women and emancipation could not function in the same political realm. He attempts to submit women to the power of the state by an analogy of two worlds; one substantially bigger than the other, but no more important for this fact. Men, on the other hand, live in a substantially larger world, but nonetheless need support while they interact and work in this world. It might therefore be inferred that Hitler saw the concept of female emancipation as equally misguided as intellectual pursuits by Jews. For Hitler, the Jew is the worst possible form of humanity. Women, according to the dictator, make their home and family their life. This is where they find fulfillment. It is the role of women to provide this support. Indeed, referring to them as "intellectuals" may as well be seen as a snide insult on the part of the dictator. Hitler points out that not only men and the state, but society as a whole, is in need of women to provide support at the basic, physical level in order to ensure that the larger world of the state runs smoothly. What social tasks does Hitler assign to women?3. For Hitler, the lives of women are fundamentally subordinate to those of the state.
