Pursuing a Liberal Arts Education

Pursuing a liberal arts education is the best way for students to ensure they build a solid base of knowledge that will allow them to pursue a variety of academic and professional endeavors. The fact is, most students entering college have still not decided which future opportunities they hope to pursue. And, even for those who believe they do know, life may present options that are now unforeseeable. History is filled with stories of people whose lives took interesting and unexpected twists. Singer Frank Sinatra spent his youth working as a laborer at a shipyard, while comedian Dan Aykroyd sorted mail for the Canadian post office. A liberal arts education provides you with the foundation you need to confidently pursue the many doors that may open

With a strong liberal arts education, students will be able to meet these challenges and opportunities with a well-rounded and mature thought process that only liberal arts can provide. A liberal arts education helps students meet life's challenges by allowing them access to different subject areas and schools of thought. Further, liberal arts students frequently find academic success in their post-graduate endeavors at medical schools, law schools, and other graduate institutions. For certain, Voltaire approached the world differently than Einstein, but someone majoring in just philosophy or physics, without the benefit of a liberal arts education, may not be exposed to both of these very unique and great minds. Students from liberal arts colleges are regularly recruited by top Wall Street firms who appreciate the students' ability to think creatively, learn quickly, and adapt. In short, the value of a liberal arts education is that it provides students with the strong intellectual foundation they will need to solve problems and create success throughout their adult lives. They can study the philosophy of Voltaire, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, and the scientific contributions of Einstein -- perhaps all in the same day. Students may consider a problem from a sociological perspective in one course, and then a historical or even mathematical perspective in the next. In the process, they are not only acquiring a great deal of knowledge, but they also are being exposed to widely different world views and styles of thinking. for you as life an d its circumstances evolve. Liberal arts students learn many different methods of inquiry, and how to approach problems in a multi-faceted way that might be more difficult in an academic model that was not interdisciplinary. And, really, by exposing students to a variety of different methods for analyzing problems and looking at the world, liberal arts schools are offering students a gift they will use throughout their lives -- the ability to think. The world is a place that is increasingly without boundaries, and the future is bound to present challenges and opportunities that are currently inconceivable. Students who study liberal arts have the opportunity to become exposed to civilization's great minds.
