Teaching in Today's World

In today's world, there are still a lot of old ideas, or should I say, a series of impressions that occur in the educational realm. Being a teacher in the 5th and 6th grade levels is not easy; for it will create different impressions -- both from the students and the teachers. As a teacher, have you ever wondered what your students think of you? How do students perceive us? What makes them perceive us as someone they want to listen to and learn from, or not? On the other hand, as a student, what do you think of your teacher? Yes, it may sound biased as you will notice because either side, it is the teacher who is being the subject of the different kinds of impressions and expectations. As the school year begins every year, we as teachers cannot help but wonder what kind of impressions we are making on our students. This includes their attitude toward us, which is the consequence of what they think of us. In as much as we try to create an image that is pleasing to the students, the reality is that it is our students who determine our importance and our sense of being credible as their teachers. Then comes the regular classes, and as the traditional way, the same notion is expected as to the flow of lessons. This is not

Aside from learning, they are also enjoying the lesson as they explore much information they can get at an instant. We were then required to organize seriously and we spent much effort in putting our thoughts to paper, anonymously. With this, they are able to assess how much they know already. With the way teachers conduct their lessons, prior impressions include the routine of lesson plan preparation, adherence to the curriculum set up, and the carry out of the lecture as they are intended to be, as we sometimes call - the bookish old school style. Teachers are trying to put more emphasis on student participation by incorporating activities that will encourage the students to express themselves. Whenever it is necessary to talk about a particular matter, one of the student's parents is invited to come to school, or the student is brought to the guidance councilor's office. Discipline is good but to the extent that is acceptable and is laid within the school's rules and regulations. Though prior impressions in teaching differ in so many ways to reality, it is always best to consider the benefits that the students will derive from the methods and techniques used. Whenever we did school exercises such as essay writing or composing a literary work, we used to include our names with our work to better identify ownership. This way, students are engaged in thinking critically about the lesson material. Children differ from adults in the way they learn things. As teachers, we are expected to act as the students' second-parents; however, there are a number of incidences where implementing discipline gets physical. To a student who does not yet understand a particular topic, no matter how you explain a process, it may take time to let him or her grasp the lesson. That was what we have been used to, even in taking periodic examinations.
