Adrienne Rich: Significant Figure of American Literature Who Managed to Create the Sense of Change
Following the Second World War, the art of literature has been one of the most important environments for the expression of the human nature and human thought. It stood out as a framework for personal analysis and contemplation despite the fact that there were numerous political elements which in the end censured inevitably the human mind. Nonetheless, it was probably this particular aspect which allowed poets and writers to feel free to express their feeling on the world around them and on the situations they faced, either in their own society or in the world outside them. Adrienne Rich can be considered in this sense one of the significant figures of the American literature who managed to create the sense of change not necessarily as a revolution, but rather more as an evolution which manifested as her writing style and her ideas matured. By comparison, Rita Dove paints a different type of story, yet with certain connection points which to a certain extent can label her as representing change, a change of perspective and a change of tone. Change in poetry is a rather difficult term to describe or define. In this sense, it has been considered that a broader sense of the notion implies that "a work of art can be called revolutio
) breaking through the mystified (and petrified) social reality, and opening the horizon of change (liberation)" (The Esthetic Dimension, x-xi). From this point of view, it can be said that the poem expressed in an artistic way her past experiences and announced her future struggles and "storms" in a society which would be shocked by the freedom of expression and behavior. From the perspective offered by Dove and especially from the fact that the poem was read in the presence of the Leader of the Free World, the US President, it can be said that the author is a tool for change at the level of ideas, of the perceptions, and of awareness for the millions who suffer at the hands of dictatorships and totalitarian regimes. This general statement can however be applied on particular examples which come to prove the validity of its meaning. In any case, the poem marks one of the most significant literary works which deal with political aspects of the contemporary world and which point out, in a hidden manner, the atrocities humans are subjected to and subject other humans. The poetical presence of the poem is that of Dictator Rafael Trujillo in Haiti. Weather abroad/ and weather in the heart alike come on/ regardless of prediction" (Rich, n. The first one is the actual storm which is approaching and whose effects, benefic or not, can be overcome. nary if, by virtue of the esthetic transformation, it represents the exemplary fate of individuals, the prevailing unfreedom and the rebellious forces, thus breaking through the mystified (and petrified) social reality, and opening the horizon of change (liberation)" (The Esthetic Dimension, x-xi). Nonetheless, the reason for which Rich has been viewed as having created a change in the literature of the middle of the 20th century was the way in which she could succeed in creating a certain atmosphere for recreating her personal drama. The poem in itself is written in a rather simple language, but it portrays rather complex attitudes. This pointer in time is relevant because the subject of the poem makes reference to events which, to a certain extent, appeal to the history of the Cold War.
