Cold War

             The Anglo-Russian "cold war" of the 19th Century and the US-Soviet "cold war" of the 20th Century were both conflicts over differences concerning the spread of communism. England's objective in the Anglo-Russian conflict was containment, the idea that England wanted to contain Russia within the rimland of Eurasia. The aim of the United States was to contain communism within the Heartland. In both "cold wars" Russia/Soviet Union wanted to spread communism throughout the entire world.
             In the 19th Century Russia's only ice free port was Murmansk. It was too far north to be functional. The control of Constantinople would enable Russia to possess the most successful port in "The Straits." Russia invaded the Balkan Peninsula and continued to occupy it even after France and England told them to leave. Russia ignored the ultimatum.
             Russia used their Big Brother Policy as a validation for occupying. They claimed that they were protecting their Slavic brothers in the Balkans. England counteracted by using their containment policy. England knew Russia's ultimate goals and England felt that if they did not interfere that Russia would begin to gain an upper hand on the "cold war." The Crimean War was a direct result of the "cold war."
             As World War II came to an end a new kind of war erupted. The "cold war" between the United States and the Soviet Union began. The US wanted to contain communism within the Heartland for fear that it might jump out of the rimland. The terror of the Domino Theory, an idea that if communism escaped the rimland then other countries would fall like dominos, caused the US to become the key fighter against the spread of communism.
