Cold War

The Anglo-Russian "cold war" of the 19th Century and the US-Soviet "cold war" of the 20th Century were both conflicts over differences concerning the spread of communism. England's objective in the Anglo-Russian conflict was containment, the idea that England wanted to contain Russia within the rimland of Eurasia. The aim of the United States was to contain communism within the Heartland. In both "cold wars" Russia/Soviet Union wanted to spread communism throughout the entire world. In the 19th Century Russia's only ice free port was Murmansk. It was too far north to be functional. The control of Constantinople would enable Russia to possess the most successful port in "The Straits." Russia invaded the Balkan Peninsula and continued to occupy it even after France and England told them to leave. Russia ignored the ultimatum. Russia used their Big Brother Policy as a validation for occupying. They claimed that they were protecting their Slavic brothers in the Balkans. England counteracted by using their containment policy. England knew Russia's ultimate goals and England felt that if they did not interfere that Russia would begin to gain an upper hand on the "cold war." The Crimean War was a direct result of t

The three facets of the geopolitical theory was (1) whoever controlled central Europe also controlled the heartland (Eurasia), (2) whoever controlled the heartland controlled the Worldland (Eurasia and Africa), and (3) whoever controlled both controlled the world. In the latter part of 1989, the most potent symbol of the "cold war" - the Berlin Wall - came down. Russia was making a significant move by bringing communism right beside the US. " NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization), and CENTO (Central Treaty Organization) were set up to contain communism in the Heartland by the Truman Doctrine. Throughout Europe this single yet powerful act caused the more than 40 year old reign of dictatorial Communist rule to come crashing down with it. The Korean "police action" created a more unhealthy relationship between communist Russia and democratic US. Russia was blatantly defying the Monroe Doctrine, which said that the US was in control of the New World, North and South America, and all other countries were to not interfere with problems occurring here. This strained the relationship between the US's neighbor, Cuba, as well as their new ally, Russia. The "cold war" was laid to rest in 1990. Not too long after the overthrow though, Castro began trying to take over American business. The United States created an alliance system in order to combat the opposing force in the "cold war. America assisted Fidel Castro in overthrowing Batista.
