Why I Want to be a Physician
Being a physician is very important to me, and I believe that I have much to offer to the medical field. My sister is currently a medical resident and my mother was a doctor for many years. I grew up in a household where intelligence, perseverance, and hard work were highly prized and have carried that opinion with me into adulthood, as I know that anything can be accomplished when it is believed in and worked for strongly enough. In addition, my ability to speak several different languages fluently will be a benefit in communicating with the diverse patients that are often seen. The entire world i
s becoming a large melting pot and diversity is no longer as much of a worry as it used to be. One area where I struggled briefly is in the study of organic chemistry, where my grades were only slightly above average and not a high as I had hoped to achieve. This is something that I originally learned at a young age, had reinforced to me in college, and also tried my best to instill in the people who I have worked with, both young and old, as a tutor for children and also in a hospital setting, visiting the sick and the dying. The more languages a person speaks the more he or she is often valued, and this is especially true when people's lives are on the line. If I can save lives because of my strong work ethic, intelligence, and ability to communicate, everything that I have worked for and everything my parents instilled in me when I was growing up will have been worth any sacrifices that they and I might have had to make in order to get to this point. I feel that a small setback like the one I suffered will actually make me a better physician, because it shows me that my belief in hard work is accurate and that I am able to take on any challenge that comes to me and get through it, rather than allowing it to get me down. However, I remained undaunted by this issue and pushed past it. These experiences and the rest of my extracurricular activities have shaped me into the dedicated individual that I am today. It challenged me to perform better, and as a result I took biochemistry and calculus simultaneously, attaining high marks in both of those classes.
