Freud and Jung: Ideas and Concepts Theory
The ideas and concepts of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung have had a far-reaching impact on the modern world and the way that we perceive and understand life. However, the theories that they created are not only confined to the psychological and academic domains but have in many ways influenced the lives of ordinary people. My personal life has also been affected in many respects by the implications of their concepts and the way that these two theorists have shaped our modern societies. Freud's central theory revolves around the discovery of the power and significance of the human unconscious, and the way that the unconscious acts and influences our thoughts and actions. Basically, Freud posited the idea that many of our everyday thoughts, feelings and actions are the result of deep levels of consciousness and metal activity that we are not normally aware of. Freud "discovered' these theoretical concepts through the treatment of female patients who were suffering from symptoms of hysteria. He found that these symptoms were largely the result of unconscious thought and feelings that had been repressed or sublimated by the patients. In Civilization and Its Discontents Freud says that "Life, as we find it, is too hard for us; it brings us too many pains, disappointments and impossible tasks. While there are of course many critics of these theories and especially of some of Freud's more esoteric views, these theories have become part of out culture and they also have provided us with a great deal of insight into ourselves as complex human beings. (Boeree) I have attempted to observe this process and to encourage a sense of holistic development in my children In the final analysis, the theories of Fred and Jung have contributed to the shape and development of our modern world. Therefore, Freud found that our unconscious life is in effect "hidden" from our normal conscious mind. ) Many psychologists believe that, "Our notions of identity, memory, childhood, and sexuality and, most generally, of meaning have been shaped in relation to, and often in opposition to, Freud's work" (Roth. The Freudian view is that these 'palliative measures' are ". In order to bear it we cannot dispense with palliative measures" (Civilization and Its Discontents, 1930). This has caused me anxiety but the understanding of sublimation and the repression of feelings and thoughts through the theories of Freud and Jung have helped me to understand myself. I found this to be the case at work and in the organizational environment, especially in the way that we interact and deal with each other. The views of Jung in particular have helped me to better understand myself and my family; as well as the deeper motivations and actions of those around me in my community and society.
