Database Management: Decision of Adopting Open Source DBMS or Not in a Small Firm

As the IT Manager of a small firm considering the use of open source DMBS including MySQL Server versus going with a proprietary DBMS like Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle 10g Express Edition there are several factors to consider. The initial cost and yearly maintenance fees of the DBMS chosen, level of customization possible with each DBMS to the firms unique process requirements, security of each type of DMBS, frequency and complexity of updates, and upward compatibility to more enterprise-class DBMS platforms more suitable for a larger company. These areas of cost and maintenance fees, customization, security, update management and upward compatibility have all favored open source DBMS applications (Casati, Castano, Fugini, 2001). In the role of IT Manager for a small firm however the focus needs to be on ongoing system reliability and security, over purely being focused on costs. All of these factors are made more complex by the level of expertise the company s DBA has and how trustworthy they are.Taking cost first, MySQL AB is free for download as are many of the open source DBMS systems. Oracle has chosen to offer their 10g Express Edition for free download from their website, hoping to alleviate the threat of MySQL

Finally, the issue of upward compatibility to larger databases is also favoring proprietary databases due to the breadth of their product lines. The potential to give DBAs the opportunity to learn marketable skills that enhance their career on the Oracle platform also needs to be considered. Maintenance is handled the same as with MySQL ABs MySQL database. With security, scalability, customization to specific company processes taken into account, freely downloadable and usable proprietary DBMS from Oracle is the better choice. Industry-specific expertise is required for developing, selling, installing, maintaining and upgrading KBMS. The application server market is going to be the segment of the enterprise software market where these two industry leaders compete most aggressively with one another. In fact the development of distributed order management systems that are capable of supporting guided selling, product and sales configuration through constraint-based technologies also rely on XML-based KBMS system support. The design and integration tools available on proprietary DMBS platforms including Oracle on the other hand are much more oriented towards business analysts and line-of-business users. Oracle s acquisition of BEA to fill the application server deficiency in their product strategy is just one of the many steps needed to compete against SAP and their application server strategy, in addition to IBM and their WebSphere Series. Where the open source and proprietary DBMS converge is in the ability to be customized to specific business processes. As project managers are taught to manage resources, people and tasks to ensure their attainment, it is critical for them to develop a database use map that provides DBAs a definition of what is required across the entire duration of the project. Only by defining security strategies by level of management and functional area can the intricacies of database security be effectively managed over the long-term in any company. Comparing DBMS and Knowledge-based Management Systems Knowledge-based management and the systems (KBMS) that coordinate and synchronize the transforming all forms of information and knowledge into a strategic asset is discussed in this section of the paper relative to DBMS. It is essential that both of these professional teams establish a clear definition of how each can assist in attaining shared objectives.
