Assessment of Croquet Project as a Knowledge Management System

Content management in many organizations tends to be chaotically managed and often comprised of multiple islands of data, databases disconnected from each other, with silos of data in each department or division. As product lifecycles get increasingly faster, and competition becomes increasingly global in nature, organizations need to capitalize on all available data available to remain viable and profitable. Enterprise content management (ECM) and Knowledge Based Management Systems (KBMS) have increased in use as companies confront the need to create a single system of record throughout their organizations. This single system of record, often called Master Data Management (MDM) is becoming the foundation for managing content enterprise-wide, becoming an integral part of ECM and KBMS systems. The next logical step in this progression of system development is the visualized of complex interrelationships within data sets, surpassing the graphical interfaces of existing analytics applications. The development of the Croquet Project, a virtual reality development environment that simplifies complex data and learning concepts, shows significant potential in academic and commercial uses (Breeding, 2005).


As a visual representation of data in a DBMS, the Croquet Project would need to also include roles-based data analysis if this technology is going to find commercial use. This is critical in commercial applications, as the use of Croquet as the design center online for global development teams could be realized if this technological leap was made. Conclusion For Croquet to be effectively used in academic and commercial applications it s critical that the collaborative environment or workspace be populated with application programmer interface (API)-based tools that are based on the XML data standard to allow for greater flexibility in defining collaboration workflows. This would be equivalent to scaffolding within the educational context. There is also the requirement of creating partitioned secure areas within Croquet, for example where a car company may be designing a new vehicle entirely online, having designers from Europe, Asia and the US work together. The 3D environment that simplifies the display of complex concepts has potential use in collaborative product design and product engineering tasks, a complex series of processes managed through online portals and more flat-file based approaches to DBMS management. There is also the requirement of allowing for users to create their own taxonomies, or approaches to organizing their content. Math and science courses that require analytical thinking and sustained concentrated such as calculus, geometry, and statistics would all benefit from having course supplemental lessons developed in the Croquet environment. The potential for Croquet is significant and brings visualization of complex concepts to what had previously in many companies been siloed databases that held insight that could be used to find greater competitive advantages and speed to market of new products (Nyffenegger, Bacs, 2008). The tailoring to individual learning requirements, pace of learning and specific interest of students would make this environment ideally suited for scaffolding for foreign language training as well. For Croquet to be used in commercial applications, the fundamental aspects of DBMS security, logical data structures, and the definition of roles-based use and learning need to be defined. For Croquet to be successful in commercial applications the more complex processes of creating engineer-to-order designs interactively through integration to computer-aided design (CAD) applications is critical. From an academic standpoint, Croquet is well aligned with the needs of scaffolding strategies online and the creation of CSCW-based environments. From a commercial perspective, this same point holds true (Nyffenegger, Bacs, 2008). There needs to be more of a focus on how to take roles-based design and development processes in the virtual collaborative workspace and equip them with stronger tools that make product design more effective.
