Rasputin
If Russian historical personalities are discussed, one that would surely stand out is Grigori Efimovich Rasputin or plainly just as Rasputin. In birth, life and even death, Rasputin epitomized mystery and intrigued. Although there are some recorded historical evidences of his life, still there are questions that begged to be answered if only to gain historical accuracy so to speak. Born [supposedly] in 1872 at Pokrovskoye along the Tura River in Tyumen district in Siberia (Willis, 2008; Atchison, 2006) to a peasant family, the young Rasputin s actual date of birth is the first issue of contention. Other records or accounts showed that he was born earlier while others stated later dates. Truly, this in itself is the start of the enigmatic life of the man who held power over the Romanovs in later years. Rasputin s childhood years were also mostly unknown except he had two siblings, Maria and Dmitri, who died before Rasputin reached adulthood. At 18, Rasputin was said to have undergone a form of religious conversion [by embracing] Khlysty sect. Happily for Rasputin (given his reputation) the sect preached the notion that the closest relationship to God could best be achieved while exhausted from prolonged sexual engagements. (Duf
Alexandra was then left with managing governmental affairs while her husband played soldier in the front lines. This mysterious ability to heal her son was enough to convince Alexandra that Rasputin, whatever people said of him, must have been sent by God. Since the Romanov court at that time was dabbling in mysticism Rasputin was recommended in 1905 by Hermogen to the royal couple. He was avidly against Russia sending troops to the frontlines but advised Tsar Nicholas II that in order for Russia to win, the tsar himself would have to lead and command the Russian forces. (Willis, 2008)Rasputin s influenced on political matters took a turn for the worst for the Romanov s during World War I. Every time Rasputin was at Alexei s bedside and doing some prayers, the young lad became at ease and looked to be recovering from his illness. Many of the people he held influence over were corrupt, lazy, or incompetent. Before that though, some members of the ruling elite plotted to kill Rasputin and they were successful albeit several mysterious stories relating to his murder and death. (Atchison, 2006) All the more, Rasputin was able to wiggle himself into a total power behind the throne. In her mind he was he the answer to her fervent prayers for God to save her son. The disease was incurable; doctors could do little except prescribe rest. Those whom he especially favored get plum posts whilst those that opposed him saw them taking the boot. (Willis, 2008) Taking control of the situation, Rasputin was able to again supposedly cure or alleviate the suffering of Tsarevich Alexei.
