As Wall Street looks gloomier and gloomier, mortgage companies and loan institutions go bankrupt, and the government debates about how much help is too much, it's everyday Americans who suffer. On October 3rd, CNN reported that amount of job loss to date was the worst in five years. On November 7, the New York Times told the story of Ken Stelma, a 49-year-old who lost his job in customer service, and despite numerous applications, has been unable to find another. Without his unemployment benefits, which ran out last month, and his health insurance, which he can no longer afford, Stelma is left jobless, penniless, reliant on his girlfriend, and afflicted with a medical condition for which he can no longer get treatment. These days, America is filled with Mr. Stelmas, good hard-working Americans who are forced into a position of poverty and reliance because of the current economic situation. While this may be frustrating for families who have been used to big spending, this affect of the present economic situation is actually beneficial to the average American. Although no one can be sure whether the positive or negative affects, or both, will be of lasting value, one can be sure that this issue will drastically impact the American present and future. Instead of living on a constant flow of credit, which has been encouraged by the media and other outlets, these Americans are now learning to be more conservative spenders, setting themselves up for a better future, and imparting the same to their children. This issue is important to me both because of the negative and positive affects that it can cause. The fact that many across the nation are out of work is of importance for many reasons. Not only does this put families at risk of not being able to make the payments on their homes or purchase groceries, but also it causes the American family to become even more unstable. From Stelmas to the children who are suddenly hearing that they can't have their favorite toys to the parents who face stress over their lack of finances, the present economy has greatly affected the average American and the American family. The increased stress brought on by financial problems can lead to a frustrating environment for children, in addition to encouraging marital problems and divorce. Financial strains can cause fighting among parents as well as a feeling that those parents cannot provide for their children.
