Ethical Use of Wireless Access Theories
Applying the ethical theories of Rest's Four Component Model, Fiske's Four Structures of Social Life and the McDonald & Pack Theory as it relates to Utilitarianism are used as the basis of evaluating the ethical behavior of my bothers' neighbors' taking the broadband signal installed just for his use. Considered stealing, the use of another neighbor's broadband is pervasive in many cities of the world. In this specific instance my brother noticed a major drop in the speed of his Internet connections. After having his ISP out troubleshoot the situation it was determined that during evening hours additional households around him were using the signal. There was no way of know which specific flats or houses, yet the drop off in performance was so much it was measurable. Applying ethics theories to the situation is the intent of this paper. Applying the Rest Four-Component Model to the specific situation at hand, it is clear that the neighbor(s) using the Internet connection lacked one or more of the elements of the Rest four-component model. Second, they may be rationalizing their behavior as being fine as they would freely share their Internet access with others, presuming the good will they have for sharing the signal freely will somehow benefit them in return. Instead it may be seen as a right, privilege or benefit of living in an area where so many people are grouped together. In short, the Rest Four Component Model has four useful components or attributes that are useful for analyzing unethical decisions or situations, yet does not provide information or a complete context for how to figure out why people completely disregard ethical decision making to begin with. A second advantage of this theory is that it also creates more of a set of expectations that will not be challenged. For this model to be useful that assumption of a person's internal values being the basis of their external b heavier is a very important link. In the situation with my brothers' Internet connection, there may be neighbors that are using others' Internet connections and say that it is fine and there is no degrading of performance or response time for those the Internet signals are being borrowed from. The Fiske Theory would capture this and be able to explain through the four decision process types why this was occurring. Second, it is also valuable in that it takes into account both the social and the internal thinking of a person in an ethical decision. ty to quickly figure out a specific situation regarding its moral value or note. It is a very useful framework for trying to get a clear understanding of how a person's internal ethics choice gets displayed or manifested to the outside world. There is the lack of independence in this theory too. His "happiness calculus" measured the amount of pleasure and pain that resulted from an action by its degree of goodness or badness, or sommum bonum. In the situation of my brothers' neighbors using his Internet connection without telling him, or getting their own, it shows that this second aspect of the Rest Theory is not being taken into account. Without social context there is no real value. The lack of moral judgment may lead the neighbor(s) to not even consider the use of Internet access as unethical or illegal.
