Reflections on What I Learned
I have learned several things throughout this course - things that will help me in the future, as I make my way through university, and that will help me grow as a person, as well. First, I learned how to write MLA style papers with citations and references, and this has helped me learn how to cite quotations properly and how to use quotations in the text of my writing. I used to make mistakes on these papers, and professors would always correct my citations, but now, I have mastered MLA style, and I know I can master other citation styles as well. This will help me in just about every class I have in school, as many classes use this common form of citation, so I have learned a skill that will be valuable for many years.Second, I have learned a lot about another country that I did not know about or understand before. We read "Persepolis" and "Persepolis: 2" by Marjane Satrapi, and I became very interested in Iran after reading this, I believe they were very influential books. The book tells the biographical story about an Iranian girl in graphic novel style, and I found I related very much to her and how she suffered from regime and oppress
I want to learn more about what created this country, and what threatens it, as well, and I think Iran is one of those countries that threatens our county, but learning more about the people makes it clear that not all of them are a threat, no more than all Americans are a threat to Muslims or Jews in the Middle East. Even though I was not born and raised in the United States, I find I want to know about the country's past and present political affairs (and not only political affairs), because I live here know and I feel as if it is my home. It has made me more aware of other countries and cultures, and made me want to learn more about them. I think that understanding American history can make me a better citizen in my new country, and that this book has made me want to learn even more about the history of the United States and where it has come from and where it is going. I also learned which slave states existed back then and where they were located, so the entire history became more meaningful and understandable to me. After reading this book, I got very interested in the country, and although I thought I knew a lot about it, I discovered I wanted to learn more, and I even got books from the library to read more about the country and its culture. This book gives much information about slavery and about slaves' everyday lives, which was sometimes difficult to read, because masters and overseers were so cruel to many slaves. This book was also difficult to read because of the violence and the hatred of the slaves, but it made me want to learn more, as well, and I will probably take an American history class on the Civil War and slavery if I can. Again, I am not American, and I know very little about the United States and its past, and that may be why this book had such an effect on me. It was very interesting to see how the interracial couple was handled, too, and how the black girl's family was so opposed to her marrying a white man. The book gives quite a bit of information about Iran's history, especially the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and gives the reader a picture of its geographical setting, as well. I have learned a style that will help me succeed as I continue my education. It seems as if it would be the other way around, that the white man's family would be opposed, but that may just be stereotyping, which this book really avoided.
