The dead
James Joyce is considered one of the great authors of the 20th century. He wrote several stories in his life time which included a several stories published as a group. These stories were called the Dubliners. The final story in this set was called "The Dead", which is arguably his most influential story in the English language. Joyce's attention to detail in this story is rarely matched, and then when it is, is hardly as meticulously crated. In "The Dead" James Joyce concentrates less on greater events than subtle symbolism. There are several underlying themes in this story. One of the more promenade one's that will be focused on is conflict. This meaning, between all the characters, for example between Freddy, and Mr. Browne, Gabriel and Mrs. Ivors, and Gabriel and his wife Gretta. Through out the story there is a lot of tension between these characters and yet not much history on why. Last but not least the main central theme of the story is mortality and isolation.The story opens up at Aunt Kate's and Julia's house. Even though there are several conflicts in this story the main theme is mortality, miscommunication, and isolation. Ivors in turn asks him why he takes trips to other land when he doesn't even know his own. Through out the night Gabriel does everything but be with his wife. After all this ran through his mind, Gabriel gets irritated with Gretta. Freddy is worried about meeting his mother, because he has supposedly taken the pledge. Gabriel makes excuses why he can't go. This is when she drops the bomb that the young man died because he had came to see her that night. Gretta describes the story of a young man she once loved, and appeared to still be in love with. Ivors as a retort to what she had said to him earlier, but before he can tell her she leaves the party stealing the light from Gabriel.
