Schools Involvment with Obesity

             Many children in today's society are overweight and ignorant about
             nutrition. Is this because of bad parenting techniques? Possibly, but
             children spend a majority of their day at school, and by creating a healthy
             environment, schools could instill healthy habits in the children's daily
             routine. Schools should become more involved in combating childhood obesity
             by creating an environment that includes healthy food and physical
             People in today's society are still against schools incorporating
             healthy choices into the schools. Some believe it will be very costly to
             everyone and it would have to be a huge investment of time and resources.
             They do not believe that more physical education classes and healthier food
             is worth all of the investments it would take in order to achieve the
             wanted goals. Also, many believe that even if they were to incorporate
             health into schools, it would be a waste of resources because students are
             able to go home and continue living an unhealthy lifestyle because they are
             constantly surrounded by junk food and they are not required to be active.
             Being obese means that there is "an excess of subcutaneous fat in
             proportion to lean body mass" (Stedman's Medical Dictionary). This can be
             caused by several factors, including "...the genes they inherit from their
             parents and the environmental factors that affect what they eat and how
             active they are" (Smolin and Grosvenor). Although inherited genes children
             get from their parents cannot be reversed, the environmental factors can.
             By eating healthy, and nutritional foods and becoming more active,
             individuals who are obese can gradually lower the amount of fat in their
