Beauty in the Poems of Robert Frost

             Whereas someone once claimed, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," famous twentieth century poet, Robert Frost, proved it. Regardless of whether it was "The Road Not Taken," "Home Burial," or "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," it is clear that Robert Frost created beautiful poetry that could be interpreted with various different meanings. What one may understand as terrifying, another could view as calming; just as what one may perceive as disheartening, another could scrutinize as uplifting. With that said, it is evident that one may agree with Lionel Trilling in stating that Robert Frost is a "terrifying" poet while someone else could very well state the complete and utter opposite, and be just as correct. Both Frost's poetry, as well as beauty, is truly in the eye of the beholder.
             When discussing the dramatic poem entitled, "Home Burial," it is important to question whether or not the husband or the wife in the story is perceived to be the "bad guy." Certain lines in the poem prove that the husband is the insensitive protagonist whereas many other lines prove just the contrary. "Home Burial" tells the story of a young child who has passed away. The aftermath of his death is a grieving challenge for both his mother and his father, who experience total emotional separation. Both characters were unable to fully grieve after the passing of their young child. The husband begs his wife,
             "Don't – don't go.
             Don't carry it to someone else this time.
             Tell me about it if it's something human.
             The sincerity demonstrated within this preceding statement seems truly genuine and heartfelt. However, a couple of lines later, the husband states, "I do think, though, you overdo it a little."
