The Definition of Conflict

             What is the definition of conflict? Everyone I know has been in a type of conflict at one point in their lives but does anyone really have a definition for it. Based on my own life experience, my definition of conflict is a situation of struggle or contest between two or more individuals with opposing needs, ideas, beliefs, values, or goals.
             In 2004, I was working in a small-size architectural office with about 10 staff members including the principal of the company. The staff comprised of five architects, four architectural technologists and one receptionist. Having just graduated from my architectural studies at Algonquin College with a diploma in Architectural Technology I was still new to the industry and knew that my role in an architectural office would be to develop design plans and work alongside with a licensed architect. I was 25 years old at the time and was working among a mature group for which I was looking for leadership and a role model as I started my career. There was a fellow that had worked there for about 3 years ahead of me and he was about 35 years old. He was a licensed architect and thought of himself with high regards. There was another seasoned architect that had immigrated to Canada but didn't have his license. Although he was the senior member of the group and had quite of experience under his belt, the other architect always gave him a hard time because of his "old-school" manners of doing certain office duties especially when it came to operating the computer software AutoCad.
             Over time, the licensed architect created an environment of hostility and always challenged everyone's opinions, even the principal's at times. Because he was a hardworking and knowledgeable employee, the principal avoided disciplining him as he didn't want to disrupt any big projects that we were working on at the time as a group.
