Early Attachment and Separation Experiences

             I believe that young children are extremely sensitive especially when it comes to negative experiences and trauma. Situations such as separations, loss and negative attachments can have very harmful effects on children and the way they develop as they grow older. A child's environment is the most important aspect of healthy development and when that environment becomes negative it can great affect human functioning. Such as with the process of experience dependent, every child and individual reacts different to their experiences so the brain does not "anticipate or prepare" for each and every experience one may encounter (Goldberg, 2000). Since these children do not already have the ability to cope with a negative experience they may become more sensitive, anxious, take up certain coping skills such as sucking their thumb, or even carrying around a certain stuffed animal or blanket that they feel keeps them safe. These sudden changes can have a long term effect on the brain development of a child because of the fact that the brain is not prepared for the situations that occur. The prolonged stress can cause permanent developmental changes for the child whether they are physical or emotional.
             Attachment, according to J. Bowlby, can come about from the necessities an infant requires from their caregiver, whether it be food, drink, or care and the person providing these necessities is normally the one in which the infant becomes attached to. This happens because the caregiver is seen as providing security to the infant which in turn makes them feel safe when surrounded by that person they are attached to. The idea of attachment in the eyes of many people describes a deep emotional bond between two living things that encourages the ability to depend on one another.
