Letter to English Committee

             It is very difficult to admit that English Comprehension and writing are my least favorite subjects. After twelve years of schooling, I thought my ability to put a cohesive thought on paper would have been accomplished so when I found out that I needed to take remedial English it was a downer.
             This class has opened my eyes to a number of things good and bad about my approach to writing. I have learned that reading over your paper multiple times and making revisions is not negative, as well as asking others to read and critique your work. More importantly, through this class I have come to realize that I have not been as organized in my approach to writing. My first drafts on Uganda and Celebrities were examples of disorganization. Re-reading my papers has helped me visualize my writing. There is mental work and organization skills that I have developed. These skills have been extended to many facets of learning throughout the class.
             Organization in writing enables a person to put together thoughts from one point to another, all cohesively so the reader can follow through in understanding. Writing just anything that pops into your head is not an example of a well thought out literary work. Being repetitive with words or claims can make for a boring writing essay. Taking a different perspective to writing has made me view my negatives not negatively but as areas I can improve and make stronger. I would admit the process has not been without pain but, I realize success does not come easily. I have learned to use my peers, family and writing center to help me filter my ideas and Being open to constructive criticism also helps.
