Reading Impairments and Learning Disorders

             Reading can be considered a normal task that we perform everyday as part of our daily life. From reading a shopping list, a map for directions, cooking instructions, or just for entertainment. We not only learn to read but read to learn as well. But for many of us learning to read can be a challenge we face everyday.
             About ten million children suffer from a reading or learning disorder. Studies show that boys and girls are affected by a reading disability at the same rate, as well as children of all cultural backgrounds, and those with different intelligence levels. Unlike other disabilities, a learning disorder does not disfigure a person, which makes it harder to pinpoint the student with the problem. "A learning disorder affects a person's ability to link information from different parts of the brain and to interpret what they see and hear". There brain structures function differently which lead to difficulty in reading, speaking, writing, or math. (Nadelson, 1999, p13).
             The most common reading disorder is known as dyslexia. Children with dyslexia may struggle to sound out words, distinguish between similar words, or are unable to name words that rhyme with one another. The reason to why some children suffer from this disorder is not quit known, but it can be a combination of psychological, neurological, and genetic factors, which may all, contribute. According to some studies, a learning disorder can result from "the failure of one side of the brain to gain dominance over the other side". (Nadelson, 1999, p.10). A reading impairment may lack a person to loose interest in reading, since much effort is needed to read, little energy is left to understand the passage or book.
