The development of today's technologies in the industrial world and welding have/_.improved tremendously compared to one hundred years ago. Cars are becoming lighterand airplanes sleeker. The automobile industry has waited for this to come aroundfor years; it is called aluminum welding. This becomes possible with the help of newmethods of aluminum welding in many different fields of the auto industry. With moreand more technology evolving, aluminum welding is progressing and becoming increasingly important in today's industrial world. Welding within itself has existed for a long time. It dates back to theEgyptians in the middle ages where gold boxes were found that had been welded together. This all evolved out of blacksmithing and later became more sophisticated. Nothing really came around until the late 1800's when arc welding was being experimented with and later invented. When steel became popular with the industrial world, welding also became popular. The main method found was Arc welding and it just branched off from there. The breakthrough occurred when aluminum began to be used with airplanes and automobiles. The process has existed for 60 years, used by refrigerator makers and, more recently, the nuclear industry (Brooke). Some machines produce too much heat for aluminum, and some do not produce enough, so you have to find the right balance. You would think that one type of welder would be able to weld any kind of material. This process of Friction-stir welding is with a pin like object that goes into the seam of the material and heats it up on the surface. Hitachi researchers solved the problem by using metal pieces with ends that have an elevated or convex layer, which fills the aperture as the two parts are friction-joined (Furukawa). In this case a welder made by Lincoln Electric is found more efficient by a racecar team while working on their car. This is done for durability and the weight of the cars. A few types of aluminum welding exist in today's auto industry and the process that occurs. This is shown when it comes to racing and high performance racing parts for cars. "The friction-stir process heats the material to about 100C below its melting temperature" (Ogando), causing it to get just hot enough to mend together with another substance. All of the methods of welding would not be able to happen without the proper machinery. A Japanese entrepreneur added on to the idea of Friction-stir welding but has not fully developed his idea. These methods are not only used for mass production but also for high performance cars like race cars.
