Abortion and the Right to Choose

             A woman dealing with the dilemma of an unwanted pregnancy puts her in the position of having to make one of the most difficult decisions of her life. William Robert Johnson from the organization Christian Voices for Life wrote, "All over the world abortions are performed every day, and for many different reasons". And he's right. But the reasons don't matter. What matters is who has the right to make that decision. When a woman makes the decision to have an abortion, it is the last and only option she feels she has. We need to keep these women safe. Keeping abortions legal will allow women to have a medically safe abortion. To make abortions illegal would be to irresponsibility leave a woman vulnerable to the medical hazards of having an illegal abortion.
             Polly Bergen from the organization Pro-Choice America, tells of her own experience with an illegal abortion that left her infertile and nearly killed her. After she decided to have an abortion, she started her search for someone to help her. Someone gave her the phone number of someone who performed abortions. She called and made the arrangements. She had to borrow $300 from a friend to pay for the abortion. She ended up in a dirty, run-down house in a dangerous neighborhood in East Los Angeles. A greasy looking man opened the door and asked for the money. He then told her to take off all her clothes except her blouse, and then gave her a towel to wrap around her bottom. She got up on a cold metal kitchen table and laid there as he completed the procedure. She recalls him using something sharp and not giving her anything for the pain. He just did it. He hand packed her with gauze and sent her on her way, telling her to expect some cramping. Because abortions were illegal at the time, Polly Bergen put herself in a very dangerous situation. One that almost cost her, her life.
