The Appeal and Risks of Body Decoration

             Why would someone want to put a hole through their flesh or mark their skin permanently? Throughout history, decorating the human body has been popular in all cultures. Tattoos and body piercings have been used by both tribal and civilized cultures as a form of expression; to signify membership in clubs, groups and societies and as reminders of personal events or people. Once thought deviant in American culture, tattoos and body piercings are seen in all walks of life and sectors in our society today. However, adornment comes with risk. In the United States laws vary regarding the age that someone can get tattoos or piercings. Because of the permanent nature of this body decoration and the potential risk of infection, disease and scarring, I believe that tattoos and piercings should not be allowed for people under age eighteen without the consent of a parent.
             Proponents of body decoration cite many reasons for allowing tattoos and body piercings. Listed high on most lists is the importance of self expression and freedom to express individuality. Body piercings and tattoos have been around for ages and many cultures allow and encourage their youth to be adorned. Piercings and tattoos are seen as way to encourage style and personal identity. In the past twenty years there has been a shift in the culture of those that get tattoos and piercings. The negative stigma associated with this art form is changing and many professionals are choosing to express themselves with body art.
             While body piercings and tattoos may be creative ways to express individuality, they come with certain health risks. Whenever the body's skin is punctured the risk exists for infection and allergic reaction. Tattoo dyes, especially red dye can cause an itchy rash that can persist for years after the initial work is done. Body piercing jewelry that is made of nickel or brass can be highly allergenic.
