Aspects of Life in Puerto Rico

Imagine all the nations in the world belonging to one big family. The United States would be the father, China the mother, Japan the daughter, France the son, and so on. In this family of nations, Puerto Rico would only be a family relative. Proud to be American citizens and part of the United States, its culture and social mores are defiantly Spanish. Puerto Rico is a gorgeous, sunny island of many different colors. It has green trees, fields and forests, brown hills, and white, sandy beaches. Puerto Rico is famous for its beautiful beaches, warmhearted people, and delicious foods. In fact, Puerto Rico is also known to be the oldest community under the American Flag.

Christopher Columbus discovered the lovely island on November 19, 1493 during his second voyage to the new world. Columbus decided to call the island San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist) in honor of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Their son was named Juan and Columbus wanted to show gratitude because the king and queen gave him the money to buy the ships he used to sail the new world. Before Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista, it was called Boriquen but a lieutenant to Columbus named Juan Ponce de Le

Language has been a central issue in Puerto Rican education and culture since 1898. The first ingredient to a Puerto Rican recipe is the Taino Indian, then goes in the European, mostly from Spain, and finally added to this melting pot are the black people. But many ask are they white, black or brown? The answer is that a Puerto Rican are all of these. Of course, Puerto Rican are people who live in, or come from the island of Puerto Rico. As of July 2003 Puerto Rico’s population was 3,885,877. Their national bird is the Stripe- headed tanager (“reina mora”), the flower is called the Puerto Rican hibiscus (“flor de maga”). English is spoken for about ¼ of the population- with limited potential. This celebration falls on January 6th and is celebrated just like Christmas. An all time favorite would be Pasteles. It’s geographical location is the Caribbean. A tiny frog found everywhere on the island. But strong resistance to the policy finally brought a change to the use of Spanish as the basic school language, English becoming a second language studied by all.

There are other dias de fiestas in Puerto Rico. Originally developed within the Puerto Rican community of New York, it draws from the roots of the Cuban and the African- Caribbean experience.
