Business at the Pike Fish Market

             The story "Fish!" begins with a narrative about the life of Mary Jane Ramirez and her work at the Pike Fish Market. Mary Jane moved from Los Angeles with her husband and two young children to Washington due to her husband's promotion within his company. Upon arriving in Washington, Mary Jane was confident that she would find a management job and she did. She began working with First Guarantee in the Operations Department as a manager.
             Mary Jane had a great work ethic – she was not the first one in or the last one to stay but her inbox was almost always empty when she left. Every department at First Guarantee passed their work through Mary Jane's department because they knew it would be done and done correctly and efficiently. There was another department in First Guarantee that received a lot of talk but not in a good way. The third floor was constantly the brunt of everyone's jokes. The most common reference used when speaking about the third floor was the "pit." Everyone who ever visited or interacted with the third floor would say it was lifeless. Even with its bad reputation, the third floor was an integral part of First Guarantee as all work passed through it.
             Almost a year had passed after Mary Jane and her family moved when tragedy struck. Mary Jane's husband suddenly died leaving Mary Jane to raise her two children alone. In the weeks following her tragedy, Mary Jane was offered a promotion – a promotion to manage the third floor. Mary Jane was very anxious about this promotion but accepted it due to the mounting financial obligations from her husband's medical care.
             Mary Jane began her first day on the third floor and observed that phones would go unanswered, one employee would unplug his phone if he was frustrated and she even noticed one employee purposely place a file at the bottom of the pile if she was being asked to move faster by another department.
