Harvey Milk and the Fight for Equality

"My name is Harvey Milk, and I'm here to recruit you," were the famous words of the first openly gay member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was elected after three times of losing elections because there weren't enough people who supported gay rights in San Francisco. Although times have changed and more people are open minded and supportive of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) communities, this large percentage of society do not have the same rights as other Americans. At the present, only ten states recognize gay marriage as a legal right and still, millions of people believe it's a sin for people of the same gender to get married.
Many human rights organization advocate and protest, stating that gay rights are in fact, basic human rights - everyone should have the opportunity to experience equality: the right to marry the individual you love, medical benefits, adoption, and equal opportunities in the workforce.
The Constitution states, "All men should be made equal." This is the law established hundreds of years ago by our forefathers. Societies around the world face violence and inequality because of who they are, who they love and what they believe. The fight for gay rights has been going on for decades, but there are still many people who reject homosexual, bisexual and transgendered individuals.
Over time, gay marriage has become more accepted but ultimately, anti-gay groups are attempting to destroy the possibility of gay marriage. Many people believe that the LGBT community mock the importance of the bible. What many individuals fail to understand is that every person on the planet should have the right to marry who they choose, regardless of gender. It's significant to discuss both sides of the argument as many homosexuals do not necessarily expect or even want to get married but simply desire the human privilege of having equal rights.
