A Tale of Two Cities By: Charles Dickens: Sydney Carton: Another Jesus Christ?Throughout the novel a Tale of Two Cities, Sydney Carton displays characteristics that mirror those of the biblical figure Jesus Christ.Christ is known for being the central figure of the Christian faith. The Bible has said that his main purpose in his short 33 years of life, was to spread the word of god through the modern-day Israeli area, and to lay his life down on a cross and shed his blood to cleanse the sins of the human race. For the first 30 years, Christ?s life would be considered ordinary for a peasant at the time. People might even say that his life was without focus. But, in the last three years of life, Christ made a remarkable impact on the Judea area.During his three years of ministry Jesus preached the gospel of god to thousands of people in Judea, along with the aid of his twelve disciples. Of course, as with any person who preaches, Jesus had followers and opposition. Christ?s enemies thought that he and his teachings were worthless, useless and hollow. This Bible verse probably comforts Carton, because it assures him that his physical self might perish, but by doing the right thing as the Lord would do, he will live eternally. Christ laid his life down in glory and honor, and even after his death, his name was not forgotten. This resembles Christ, because he too must have been fairly smart to be able to carry on these unusual sermons that he held, however during his early life, he did not use his intellect in a positive way. Both Christ and Carton were humble creatures c that did this out of pure love for someone. Another sign of connection between the two is who were Carton?s immediate enemies and who were his ultimate foes, just as who were Jesus?. His ultimate enemy was Satan himself, for he was the one who was responsible for bringing sin and strife in the world, and therefore was the reason that Christ had to go to the cross, lay his life down and wash away the sins of the world. Carton is probably repeating this in his mind because he probably had some doubts as to whether he should die or not, just as Christ did before he was sent to the cross. Dickens also hints a symbol towards Christ because he frequently uses the Bible verse: ?I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die? (John 11:25-26 in the Bible and page 386 in A Tale of Two Cities). He died not for his own benefit, but to make a difference in the lives of others, just as Christ did. pted his arrest, conviction and eventually his death, but not before he was beaten continuously and ruthlessly. His ultimate enemy was Madame Defarge, who was the person responsible for pressing the charges against Darnay, thus causing all of these problems. In the early stages of the novel Carton?s life was without meaning and empty. When making an attempt to save Darnay for the second time, Lorry thought that Carton was a kind and brave man, and devoted his time and endangered his life; to follow and aid him in any way he could, to save Darnay.
