Being the most influential men in psychology, Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung had both similarities and differences in their theories and insights. Although they shared many of the same beliefs like in dreams and their symbolism of the unconsciousness, and how the unconscious mind determines traits of personality. The majority of their work contradicted the other. Freud believed in dividing the human personality into systems, and had its ground work based on the human mind's lust for sex urges as a deciding factor in ones actions. While Jung on the contrary believed that peoples personality was divided into personal and collective consciousness, not sexual urges. Throughout the years when Freud and Jung first met they developed a very close father son like relationship consisting of over three hundred and fifty letters that they hand wrote to each other. However this close relationship was destined to be divided into an intense rivalry to surpass the other because of their extreme different interpretations of the human mind Sigmund Freud was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire on May 6, 1856. His father was a merchant, Freud's family background was Jewish, but his father was a freethinker
When the first letters of correspondence started between them, Freud and Jung spoke of each other with great admiration and respect. "The Psycho pathology of Everyday Life" was published in 1901, and it theorized that forgetfulness and slips of the tongue were not accidental at all, but it was the "dynamic unconscious" revealing something meaningful. Knowing something about the writer's psychological make up can give use insight into his work. Carl Gustav Jung was born on July 26, 1985 in Kesswil, Switzerland. Freud and his wife fled to England, after the Nazi's took over and he later died there in September, 1939. Freud's most well-known theory was the "Oedipus complex. Their letters eventually stopped as they both realized that their difference in opinion was too much of a strain on their relationship. Some of the advantages to this type of criticism are that because symbols and their meaning are used to defragment the work of literature, it makes it easier for the work of art to last through time, specially with works that are highly symbolic. Freudian critics like to point out the sexual implications of symbols and imagery, since Freud's believed that all human behavior is motivated by sexuality. The difference between the two types of criticism is based on the principles that Freud and Jung believed in. That was the first of more then three hundred and fifty letters of correspondence that they wrote to each other during their short friendship. This type of criticism has some advantages, and it makes it easier to understand some works, specially if certain characters are defined as having psychological problems. Freud became the professor at the University of Vienna in 1902.
