European negative effects
Although the European's plan for America was to build successful colonies for their people, it only lead to the persecution of others. In building their colonies the Europeans only thought of themselves in their power-hungry search for wealth. They acted as dictators coming into a country that's not theirs and forcing the inhabits to do their bidding. In coming to America the Europeans stole the Native Americans' land, opened up the slave trade, and caused many deaths with the numerous wars. The biggest problem in Europe building colonies in America was that it belonged to the Native Americans. Although they collectively possessed the land, so therefore didn't see it as anyone Native Americans', they were still the first inhabitants. The statistics of the slave trade are written in "American Passages" as, "West Africa lost to the Atlantic slave trade at least 20 million people, of whom 10 million actually survived to toil in American fields" (20). It's stated in "American Passages" that, "While some settlers attempted to trade for food, others burned Indian villages and crops. With all of this also came Native American murders. Rai 2Instead of the Europeans doing the work themselves, they enslaved Africans to work in their fields and plantations. Taking of the land was only the first step for them. I know it would've been hard for the two cultures to coincide together but if different portions of the land were set aside for both, then that problem wouldn't come up. The Europeans opened up the slave trade, stole Native American lands, and caused many deaths along the way. With all of these reasons, how could the European encounter with America been seen as positive? Everything they did during those times was to benefit themselves only, the way they wanted it to be. The slaves were treated as products instead of humans, being forced to leave their home country of Africa as well as their family. Attempting suicide during the Atlantic trips, many slaves didn't see surviving to go to America as a good thing. The Europeans also forced them to live in praying towns, such as after the "King Philips War," persuading them to believe in Christianity. Sickle cell amenia also came when the slaves began to become immune to the malaria. An example of this is after the rebellion at Chesapeake Bay in which John Washington with his militia slaughtered many of the people. Murder wasn't the only way the Europeans did their damage, they also brought diseases such as malaria. The colonists seem more like thieves and murderers than settlers to me.
