The Book review will consist of a critical, reflective analysis of a book which makes a major contribution to green/environmental thought. Penguin Books Camberwell, Victoria, AustraliaBrown's Book is quite an easy read and I would suggest it is aimed at a young audience - most likely young voters. However the fact that this is an election year doesn't make the issues Brown (2004) raises any less poignant. This book also makes clear Brown's emotional connection with his world and his mission, which turns his book of potentially depressing fact and figures on governments, and industries, lack of 'Greenness', into an inspirational piece. As an introduction to 'Memo for a Saner World' I have included the blurb which appears on the back cover. It reads thus-Over the years, Bob Brown has been assaulted, jailed, vilified and shot at for his stance on the environment and human rights. This is his account of the defining moments in that life of activism, from the famous Franklin River blockade to his parliamentary protest against
5 billion Sun Fund Bill' which would produce up to 50 000 jobs, cost the tax payer nothing, and help save the environment amongst other things. Brown quotes The New York Times which noted that the agreement 'was hailed as historic by governments and environmental groups alike. Brown goes into the history of scientific research in Antarctica and the formation of the Antarctica Treaty in 1959. These mud flats provide a stop over for migrating birds, most of these birds begin their flights in Australia and this construction will drastically effect their existence. Brown then goes on to mention the press conference he called- stating that this action was against human rights and that the refugees should be brought to Australia and treated in accordance with the law- and the 'abusive mail, including bullets and pictures of nooses' that soon followed. What Brown doesn't cover are topics like Eco Grief and issues like these on the psyche of the Australian voters. The issues of education being the catalyst, a Greens member moving a motion, 'in April 1991, of no confidence in Minister Patmore because he had broken a major commitment to fund primary school education. He goes on to say that the campaign is growing and high profile people are now lending their name. and the new prime minister's first announcement was that the dam would not be built'(pg.
