A little cloud
Anger as a Brutal Act in James Joycefs short story gA Little Cloudh gA Little Cloudh written by James Joyce shows the life of a man, Chandler, who is obliged to his job and his marriage. He gets angry about his inability to escape this imprisonment. After a night of drinking and introspection, he comes home enraged with anger. His fury results as a brutal act towards his child, symbolically expressing his frustration with himself and with his life of boredom and missed opportunities. This paper discusses the character, Little Chandler, in James Joyce's "A Little Cloud", analyzing how the abuse against his child in the end of the story is caused by his feelings of anger and sense of imprisonment due to his jealousy and envy towards his friend Gallaher. Ultimately, his bottled up anger develops from the regret of not becoming as successful as he longed for.The short story begins with the introduction of a man known as Little Chandler, whom gets the name due to his fragile physical appearance of being a small and childlike man. He anticipates his meeting to come with his friend Gallagher, who left Ireland eight years earlier to soon become an important figure on the London press. Before leaving KingŒs Inns, where he works a
The paralyzing elements that keep him away from freedom are gathered in the intrusive nature of his child. He was sure that he could do something better than his friend had ever done" (Joyce 8). As he tries to get through a Byron poem, the child wakes up and starts to cry. He is so jealous because he thinks that he has had a much better education, and, therefore, he should have had more chances in life because "Gallaher was his inferior in birth and education. In some eyes, Little Chandler would be the one whom they considered succeeded in life by marrying someone who he loved and created a little child because of their love. What a perfect way to rid yourself of all anger by taking out your frustrations on a defenseless child who is crying. He realizes that he could have reached something better in his life "if he only got the chance" (Joyce 8). Chandler probably feels that he is the stronger and dominant person for once, since in a sense, he is defenseless against Gallaherc success and fame wise. He once had a longing for a different world where he could get reputation and come to fame. Moreover, the little outburst does not make Chandler any less trapped. At heart, Little Chandler is a man clinging desperately to an illusion, and when that illusion explodes in the face of Gallagher's visit, he is forced to confront the unpleasant reality of his situation. He came home late and forgot to get the coffee for his wife. Chandler, however, has married and got a child since the last time they met each other. The crying baby takes him back from his dreams to reality, and this is the reason for his anger. But Gallagher's character traits and achievements, which Chandler completely envies, only make Chandler more resentful.
